August Sander

As I have decided to focus my project towards photographing people in their working environment, I feel that German photographer, August Sander's work links to my project idea well. Sander really manages to capture the atmosphere within Germany post WW1, and just as Hitler was beginning to rise to power in the 1930's.

Varnisher, Ca, 1930

Pastry Cook, 1928

Bricklayer, 1928

Although, in the images above, much of the subject's backgrounds are very minimal and empty, it is suggested by their working uniform and tools, as to what their job is without looking at the photograph's title. Their dirty clothes suggest hard work and labour and make it clear to the viewer which environment they 'belong' within.
